Georgia Absentee Voter Site Under Attack

On October 14, 2024, Georgia’s absentee voter website faced a cyberattack believed to originate from a foreign source, prompting immediate action from the state’s cybersecurity team. The surge in unauthorized access attempts was significant enough to raise alarms within the secretary of state’s office. Although the attack resulted in a slowdown of the absentee ballot portal, the robust cybersecurity measures in place ensured that the system was not paralyzed or compromised. Gabriel Sterling, the chief operating officer of the secretary of state’s office, confirmed that while the attack was concerning, it was effectively mitigated.

Officials from Georgia’s secretary of state emphasized that the state’s voting systems are not connected to the internet, which significantly reduces the risk of successful cyberattacks impacting the election process. The cybersecurity team, working alongside external partners such as Cloudflare, played a crucial role in monitoring and defending against the potential breach. The proactive measures taken by the state highlight the importance of cybersecurity in maintaining the integrity of the democratic process, particularly during an election season.

The timing of this cyberattack is particularly notable, as early voting in Georgia has already shattered records ahead of the upcoming Election Day. With heightened political engagement among voters, the integrity of the absentee ballot system becomes even more critical. As more citizens opt for absentee voting, safeguarding these systems from foreign interference is paramount to ensuring public confidence in the electoral process.

As the investigation continues, state officials are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with federal authorities, including the FBI and the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The incident underscores the ongoing threat of cyberattacks targeting the electoral infrastructure in the United States, particularly from foreign adversaries. By reinforcing cybersecurity measures and raising public awareness, Georgia aims to protect its electoral processes and uphold the democratic values that underpin the nation.
