TSA Introduces New Identity Tech at ANC

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has begun implementing state-of-the-art Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2) at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) to streamline the identity verification process at security checkpoints. This advancement marks an evolution from the first-generation CAT units, which have been in use for several years. The new CAT-2 units utilize facial matching technology to enhance security measures, providing a more efficient and accurate way to verify travelers’ identities.

The CAT-2 units operate by scanning travelers’ photo identification and capturing a real-time image of the individual. This image is then compared to the photo on the ID to confirm the traveler’s identity and verify their eligibility for various screening processes, including TSA PreCheck®. The integration of this technology allows TSA officers to conduct identity verification without requiring travelers to exchange their boarding passes, thereby expediting the screening process and enhancing overall passenger experience.

TSA Federal Security Director for Alaska, Pete Duffy, expressed enthusiasm for the introduction of CAT-2 technology at ANC, highlighting its role as a crucial resource in the TSA’s mission to ensure transportation security. The units are expected to become more frequently visible to travelers in the coming weeks, allowing passengers to benefit from this innovative approach to identity verification. The TSA aims to provide a seamless travel experience while maintaining rigorous security standards.

Importantly, the CAT-2 units ensure that all photos captured during the verification process are not stored or used for any purpose other than immediate identity confirmation. Travelers who prefer not to participate in facial matching have the option to use alternative identity verification methods, with clear signage indicating that participation is voluntary. This approach not only enhances security but also respects passengers’ preferences, fostering a more comfortable travel environment.
