Kyocera Suffers Ransomware Attack at Library

Kyocera Communication Systems Co., Ltd. has reported a ransomware attack that impacted the installation of a library system at the Ikaruga Town Library in Nara Prefecture, Japan. The breach was discovered on September 30, 2024, when an error in the server connection alerted officials to the fact that the data on the server had been encrypted. This unfortunate incident has delayed the scheduled launch of the library system, originally set to begin operations on October 1, 2024, thereby restricting users’ access to search the library’s collection online.

The attack occurred during the implementation phase, which started on September 10, 2024, following a request from the Ikaruga Town Library. Initially, the system was to be operational for library staff only by September 29, 2024. However, the encryption of the data due to the ransomware infection forced the system to be disconnected from the external network, bringing the installation process to a halt. As a result, the library’s users are currently unable to utilize the online catalog to search for books and other resources.

Kyocera is actively investigating the cause and extent of the ransomware attack while working with external cybersecurity experts to restore the system and safeguard its operations. Although the server contained personal information of library users, there has been no confirmed evidence of data leakage or ransom demands at this time. The company has expressed its commitment to addressing the situation and minimizing the disruption caused to the library and its patrons.

In a public statement, Kyocera extended its sincerest apologies to all users of the Ikaruga Municipal Library for the inconvenience and concern caused by the incident. The company emphasized that it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and as efforts to secure and restore the system progress. This incident highlights the increasing threats posed by ransomware attacks on public institutions and the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures in safeguarding sensitive information.
