New York’s Keuka College Hit With Breach

Keuka College in New York has confirmed a data security incident that may have involved the personal information of current and former students and employees. The breach was identified on April 25, 2024, when suspicious activity within the college’s network prompted immediate security measures. The college quickly secured its systems and initiated an investigation with the assistance of independent cybersecurity specialists to assess the scope and nature of the breach.

Following a comprehensive investigation that concluded on August 21, 2024, Keuka College reported that it could not definitively ascertain whether personal information was affected. The college maintains a variety of sensitive records, including names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial account information. To address the potential risks, the college reached out to affected individuals in May, offering one year of free credit and identity monitoring services to help mitigate any adverse effects from the incident.

In response to the breach, Keuka College has set up a toll-free call center to address questions and concerns from the community. The call center operates Monday through Friday and provides resources for individuals seeking guidance on protecting their personal information. The college has emphasized the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in safeguarding sensitive data, urging individuals to monitor their financial statements and credit reports closely.

The incident at Keuka College highlights the growing challenges educational institutions face in securing their digital environments. As cyberattacks become increasingly sophisticated, it is crucial for organizations to implement robust security measures and remain vigilant in protecting the personal information of their communities. The college’s commitment to transparency and support for affected individuals underscores the need for ongoing awareness and preparedness in the face of evolving cyber threats.
