Altman Plants Data Breach Exposes SSNs

On September 18, 2024, Altman Specialty Plants filed a notice of a significant data breach with the Texas Attorney General, revealing that unauthorized access to its computer network compromised sensitive consumer information. The breach involved a wide range of personal data, including names, Social Security numbers, financial account details, driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, passport numbers, health insurance information, and medical records. In response, Altman has begun notifying individuals whose information may have been affected by the security incident.

The breach was initially detected on September 11, 2023, when Altman observed suspicious activity within its systems. This prompted the company to secure its network and engage third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident. Their investigation confirmed that certain files and folders had been accessed, prompting a thorough review to determine the scope of the breach. By July 2, 2024, Altman completed this review, identifying the specific data that was compromised.

Following the findings, Altman filed a notice of the breach with the Texas Attorney General and is actively sending out notification letters to affected individuals. These letters provide details about the nature of the compromised information and the steps individuals can take to protect themselves against potential identity theft or fraud. The company is urging anyone who received a notification to be vigilant and consider consulting with a data breach lawyer to understand their rights and options.

Founded in 1975 and based in Vista, California, Altman Specialty Plants is the largest horticultural grower in the United States, specializing in over 1,025 varieties of cacti and succulents. The company employs more than 4,441 people and generates approximately $2.3 billion in annual revenue. As it navigates this data breach, Altman is committed to enhancing its cybersecurity measures to safeguard consumer data and restore trust among its customers and stakeholders.
