A pro-Russia hacker group known as NoName057 has intensified its cyber operations against Taiwan in response to recent remarks by Taiwanese President William Lai. The group launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack targeting various Taiwanese government websites, including local tax bureaus in New Taipei City, Keelung, Hsinchu, and Taoyuan. The attack, which involved an HTTPS flood, caused temporary disruptions to these sites, although they have since been restored. NoName057, a group with a history of targeting countries critical of Russia’s actions, has claimed responsibility for the ongoing attacks and used its Telegram channel to boast about the operation.
The cyber assault was reportedly triggered by President Lai’s controversial comments suggesting that China should address its territorial disputes with Russia. During a recent television interview, Lai questioned China’s commitment to territorial integrity, pointing out that Beijing had not sought to reclaim land ceded to Russia by the Qing Dynasty in the 1858 Treaty of Aigun. This public criticism of China’s geopolitical stance appears to have provoked a harsh response from the hacker group, which has positioned itself as a defender of Russian interests.
