US Cracks Down on Russian Election Meddling

On September 4, 2024, the United States government took decisive action against Russian efforts to interfere in the 2024 presidential election, unveiling a comprehensive strategy to counteract Kremlin influence. The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the seizure of 32 internet domains used by a covert Russian campaign, known as “Doppelganger.” This campaign, allegedly orchestrated by Russian state actors, aimed to spread propaganda and misinformation by mimicking reputable U.S. news sites and using fabricated social media influencers.

The DOJ unsealed indictments against Russian nationals Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva for their roles in establishing a U.S.-based content creation company that facilitated the dissemination of Russian government propaganda. The Department of the Treasury also imposed sanctions on key figures from the Russian state-funded news outlet RT, including Kalashnikov, RT’s digital media projects manager, and Afanasyeva, for their involvement in covertly recruiting American influencers and manipulating social media narratives.

In a parallel effort, the Treasury Department targeted members of the pro-Kremlin hacktivist group RaHDit, which includes former Russian intelligence officers like Aleksey Garashchenko and Anastasia Yermoshkina. These sanctions aim to disrupt their activities and limit their ability to conduct influence operations. The State Department has introduced new visa restrictions and announced a $10 million reward for information on foreign interference in U.S. elections.

Attorney General Merrick Garland and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco condemned the Doppelganger campaign, highlighting its use of cybersquatting and fake profiles to promote false narratives and undermine democratic processes. The operation’s goal was to sway public opinion, bolster pro-Russian policies, and weaken international support for Ukraine. This coordinated response underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to safeguarding electoral integrity and countering foreign interference.
