Expand Cybersecurity Hiring Beyond Norms

The Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec), in collaboration with ISC2, has released new guidance for addressing the growing skills shortage in cybersecurity. Despite a record high of 5.5 million cybersecurity professionals globally, the sector faces a 12.6% skills gap. In the UK alone, the shortage has risen by 29% to 73,000 workers, highlighting the urgent need for innovative recruitment strategies.

The report emphasizes the importance of broadening recruitment channels beyond traditional job portals. It suggests reaching potential candidates through academic institutions, career development centers, diversity-focused organizations, recruitment fairs, and military bases. Additionally, it recommends targeting young talent in non-traditional venues like gaming centers and tech communities.

To effectively tackle the talent shortage, the report advises hiring based on transferable skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving, rather than solely technical expertise. It also stresses the importance of comprehensive onboarding, continuous training, mentoring, and creating a supportive work environment to prevent burnout and encourage long-term retention.

CIISec CEO Amanda Finch underscores the critical need for improved hiring practices and support systems within organizations. She warns that without these changes, the cybersecurity industry risks losing talent to other sectors. The guidance aims to equip organizations with practical strategies to attract and retain skilled professionals in the face of increasing competition.
