One-Third of Breaches Go Undetected in 2024

A recent Gigamon survey highlights that over one-third of data breaches remain undetected due to limitations in current security tools, particularly in complex hybrid cloud environments. As organizations face increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, including those powered by AI, many find their existing solutions inadequate for identifying and addressing breaches in real time. Despite substantial investments in cybersecurity, only 54% of organizations feel well-prepared to handle unauthorized access in these environments.

The survey also points to significant gaps in visibility, with only 40% of respondents having insight into East-West traffic, a crucial aspect of cloud security. This lack of visibility is compounded by encryption, which hides 93% of malware attacks, yet 76% of respondents still trust that encrypted traffic is secure. The study underscores the need for improved observability across all data in motion to enhance threat detection and response capabilities.

CISOs are particularly burdened by these challenges, with 59% expressing that increased board-level priority on cyber risk would empower them. The survey reveals that 69% of CISOs struggle with detecting encrypted threats and feel their tools are not effective enough. Additionally, 75% of CISOs report their security teams are overwhelmed by a growing array of tools, reflecting a broader issue of tool efficacy and management.

The findings suggest that organizations must shift towards deeper observability and unified visibility across their hybrid cloud infrastructures. As AI continues to advance and cyber threats evolve, having comprehensive, real-time network intelligence is crucial for mitigating risks and ensuring effective security measures.
