Ukraine and Japan have signed a bilateral security agreement, under which Japan will provide Ukraine with $4.5 billion in 2024 and continue support for ten years. The agreement includes the transfer of non-lethal equipment to Ukraine and focuses on advancing cooperation in information technologies and demining. Japan’s assistance will also cover medical treatment for injured Ukrainian soldiers, intelligence cooperation, and the protection and reconstruction of critical infrastructure.
Additionally, Japan will aid in strengthening Ukraine’s cyber and information security and ensure the free navigation and security of sea lanes. The partnership aims to explore ways to develop Ukraine’s industrial base, including involving the private sector, creating joint ventures, and conducting research. This agreement is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to secure bilateral agreements with all G7 members.
Ukraine’s president highlighted that this agreement marks a significant step in strengthening Ukraine’s international security alliances, bringing the total number of signed agreements to 17. The country is also preparing ten more agreements for signing to further solidify its global partnerships.
The bilateral security deal with Japan is expected to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities and support its ongoing efforts to enhance national security and infrastructure. The agreement signifies Japan’s commitment to Ukraine’s stability and underscores the growing international cooperation in addressing regional and global security challenges.
