On August 16, 2024, the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes in Fort Hall, Idaho, discovered a potential cybersecurity incident. The Tribes’ Information Technology Department quickly launched an investigation, engaged their cybersecurity consultant firm, and notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The public was alerted to the situation through the Tribes’ Facebook page on August 19.
Initial investigations revealed a network security breach, prompting the Tribes to hold meetings for employees and tribal members on August 20 to explain the situation. Interim Executive Director Tino Batt emphasized the seriousness with which the Tribes are handling the breach and their collaboration with the FBI and Homeland Security contractor to address vulnerabilities and enhance security measures.
Tribal Government email, network, and phone systems were expected to be offline for several days to address the issue. Offices were closed on August 19, August 22, and August 23 to facilitate cybersecurity work and resolve technical problems.
The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes committed to keeping the public informed through their website and Facebook page. They are also assessing the impact on public safety systems and urging continued use of emergency services while the investigation and network rebuilding proceed.
