PoC Released for Microsoft Bluetooth RCE

A proof-of-concept (PoC) has been released for a critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in Microsoft’s Bluetooth service, which was addressed in the March 2023 Patch Tuesday updates. This vulnerability, associated with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), allows attackers who are on the same network as the victim to execute arbitrary code on affected Windows systems. The PoC publication highlights the potential risks associated with this flaw and underscores the importance of applying security updates.

The vulnerability allows an attacker to exploit BLE features by manipulating advertising data sent between devices. Specifically, the flaw involves a buffer overflow in the Bluetooth stack’s handling of advertising data, which can be triggered when a certain number of sections in the data exceeds the expected limit. This out-of-bounds write can lead to arbitrary code execution, posing a significant security threat.

Microsoft has patched this vulnerability by implementing safeguards to prevent the exploitation of the flaw. The company has advised all users of affected Windows products to update their systems promptly to protect against potential attacks. The update ensures that if the number of sections in the advertising data reaches the problematic threshold, the system will handle it safely by exiting with an error.

The release of the PoC has increased the urgency for users to address this vulnerability. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to upgrade their Windows installations to the latest versions to prevent exploitation. The availability of the PoC makes it easier for attackers to understand and exploit the flaw, making timely patching and vigilance critical to maintaining system security.
