Andaman Nicobar Islands Boost Cyber Safety

The Andaman and Nicobar Island Police, in collaboration with the Andaman Nicobar Command, organized a cyber awareness session under the “Cyber Surakshit Vibhag” initiative. Held on June 13, 2024, at the Likhabali Auditorium in Brichgunj, the event saw over 350 participants, focusing on enhancing digital literacy and cyber security awareness. Key topics included safe online practices, phishing detection, honey trapping, and data protection strategies.

This session is part of a broader weekly initiative aimed at strengthening cyber safety across the region. The first session was conducted by Devesh Chandra Srivastava, IPS, Director General of Police, A&N Islands, on April 15, 2024, at the Andaman & Nicobar Command for ANC officers. Srivastava highlighted the importance of digital security, especially given the region’s strategic location and the rise in cybercrimes like honey trapping, often involving foreign intelligence operatives.

The initiative is a response to the increasing cyber threats in the region, with a focus on educating both government entities and the public on the importance of cyber safety. Srivastava emphasized that the remote geographical location of the islands makes them particularly vulnerable to such threats, and he stressed the need for ongoing education and awareness to prevent cybercrimes.

The program’s success led to a similar session on May 29, 2024, at the Regional Headquarters of the Indian Coast Guard in Port Blair. Conducted by Mr. Lakshay Pandey, Dy.SP Cyber Crime, this session aimed to sensitize Coast Guard personnel to cyber security and honey trapping. The lecture was attended by nearly 200 officers and emphasized the importance of precautions and best practices while engaging with IT platforms to ensure digital safety.
