Paris-Saclay University Hit by Ransomware

On August 11, 2024, Paris-Saclay University was struck by a significant ransomware cyberattack, leaving its website inaccessible as of August 13. The attack, which encrypts and blocks access to an organization’s computer systems while demanding a ransom for their release, has triggered a major response from the university. A crisis unit has been established to address the situation, and the institution has enlisted the support of the National Agency for the Security of Information Systems (ANSSI). However, both the university and ANSSI have yet to provide detailed information about the attack’s impact and the ongoing response efforts.

Paris-Saclay University, which was ranked 15th in the 2023 Shanghai ranking and is recognized as a leading educational institution in continental Europe, attracts numerous international students to its expansive campus located south of Paris. The attack has disrupted the university’s operations and raised concerns about the security of its digital infrastructure. The incident is particularly notable as it coincides with the release of the 2024 Shanghai ranking on August 15, which may affect the institution’s global standing.

This cyberattack on Paris-Saclay University follows another significant ransomware incident that targeted the Grand Palais in Paris and approximately forty French museums the previous week. The attackers focused on the system responsible for centralizing financial data, demanding a ransom while threatening to release the encrypted data if their demands were not met. This series of high-profile attacks highlights the growing trend of ransomware threats against major institutions and cultural landmarks.

As the situation develops, the university and relevant authorities are working diligently to resolve the issue and restore access to the affected systems. In the meantime, the incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and preparedness in the face of increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. The university’s response and recovery efforts will be closely watched by the academic community and beyond, as they navigate this challenging period.
