The breach was traced back to an archived website for The Stone Center for Latin American Studies, which was hosted by a now-former third-party vendor. Upon discovering the breach, Tulane took immediate action by taking the website offline and notifying law enforcement.
The investigation, concluded on April 10, 2024, found that the data accessed included names and payment card information. Given the age of the data, it is likely that most of the payment card information has expired. Nevertheless, Tulane chose to notify affected individuals as a precautionary measure.
On June 5, 2024, Tulane sent notification letters to 10 Maine residents, providing details about the incident and a toll-free number for further inquiries. The organization is committed to transparency and ensuring that those affected have access to relevant information.
To prevent similar incidents in the future, Tulane took the affected website offline immediately after the breach was discovered. The university continues to enhance its security measures to protect against potential future breaches and safeguard sensitive information.
