Peterson Holding Suffers Data Breach

Peterson Holding, based in Maine, recently disclosed a significant data breach that occurred between June 27 and 28, 2023. During this period, the company detected suspicious activity within its network, prompting an immediate response. The breach involved unauthorized access to certain computer systems, which potentially exposed sensitive personal information, including names and Social Security numbers. In response, Peterson Holding swiftly took measures to contain the breach by isolating affected servers, changing account passwords, and initiating a comprehensive investigation into the scope and impact of the incident.

The investigation, which concluded on May 8, 2024, determined that files containing personal data had been accessed by an unknown third party without proper authorization. Peterson Holding has since notified one Maine resident who was affected by this breach. The notification has been sent in the form of a letter, adhering to the format outlined in Exhibit A of the company’s notice.

In an effort to mitigate the impact of the breach, Peterson Holding is offering 12 months of free credit monitoring services through Epiq to individuals whose personal information may have been compromised. Additionally, the company is taking proactive steps to strengthen its cybersecurity measures, including reviewing and updating its security policies, assessing and deploying new cybersecurity tools, and enhancing employee training programs. These efforts are aimed at preventing future incidents and fortifying the company’s defenses against potential cyber threats.

Peterson Holding is also providing affected individuals with guidance on protecting themselves from identity theft and fraud. This guidance includes instructions on placing fraud alerts and security freezes on credit files, monitoring credit reports, and remaining vigilant for signs of fraudulent activity. The company encourages those impacted to report any suspicious activities to their credit card companies, banks, or appropriate authorities. Through these actions, Peterson Holding seeks to support affected individuals and improve its security posture to prevent similar breaches in the future.
