Critical RCE Vulnerability in Telerik Server

Progress Software has uncovered a critical security vulnerability in its Telerik Report Server product, posing a serious risk to its users. The vulnerability, designated as CVE-2024-6327, has been given a CVSS score of 9.9, highlighting its severity. This flaw affects versions of the software prior to 2024 Q2 (10.1.24.709) and is linked to insecure deserialization. Insecure deserialization vulnerabilities occur when an application improperly processes serialized data, which can be manipulated by attackers to execute arbitrary commands. This particular vulnerability could allow attackers to remotely execute code, potentially compromising sensitive information and system integrity.

The risk associated with deserialization vulnerabilities lies in their ability to enable remote code execution (RCE). When exploited, these vulnerabilities allow attackers to inject and execute their own code within the application, often with high-level privileges. In the case of Telerik Report Server, an attacker could gain complete control over the affected server, leading to significant security breaches. The vulnerability’s presence in versions prior to 2024 Q2 (10.1.24.709) necessitates an urgent response from users to update their systems. Progress Software has addressed the issue in version 10.1.24.709, and users are strongly urged to upgrade to this version immediately.

In addition to updating the software, Progress Software recommends a temporary mitigation strategy to further protect systems while updates are being applied. Administrators should change the user assigned to the Report Server Application Pool to one with limited permissions. This precautionary measure reduces the potential damage an attacker could inflict if they were able to exploit the vulnerability. To check if a server is running a vulnerable version, administrators can access the Report Server web UI, log in with an account that has administrator rights, and navigate to the Configuration page. The version number can be found under the About tab.

The discovery of CVE-2024-6327 follows closely on the heels of another critical security flaw in Telerik Report Server, CVE-2024-4358, which was disclosed just two months earlier. That vulnerability, also with a high CVSS score of 9.8, allowed attackers to bypass authentication mechanisms and create unauthorized administrator accounts.
