NASA has taken a significant step forward in its use of artificial intelligence by appointing David Salvagnini as its first chief AI officer. This move comes as AI technology plays an increasingly critical role in various aspects of space exploration and research. Salvagnini, who previously served as NASA’s chief data officer, is now tasked with aligning the strategic vision and planning for AI applications across the agency. His new role is part of NASA’s broader strategy to leverage AI to accelerate discovery and enhance mission support, data analysis, and system development.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized the importance of staying at the forefront of AI advancements while ensuring its responsible use. He highlighted that AI has been safely utilized at NASA for decades and that its expanded role can significantly speed up the pace of scientific discovery. Salvagnini’s leadership is expected to guide NASA’s efforts in using AI responsibly both in space and on Earth, benefiting all of humanity.
Salvagnini’s appointment is also in line with President Joe Biden‘s Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of AI. This executive order underscores the federal commitment to harnessing AI technology while addressing potential risks. As chief AI officer, Salvagnini will continue NASA’s collaboration with other government agencies, academic institutions, industry partners, and AI experts to ensure the agency remains at the cutting edge of AI technology.
Before joining NASA in June 2023, Salvagnini spent over two decades in technology leadership roles within the intelligence community, including at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. His extensive experience in technology and data management positions him well to lead NASA’s AI initiatives. This appointment marks a pivotal moment for NASA as it integrates advanced AI technologies to further its mission of space exploration and scientific discovery.
