BMD Website Hacked and Recovered in 2 Hours

On July 9, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) faced a significant disruption as its website fell victim to a cyberattack, rendering it inaccessible for a period exceeding two hours. The attack, reportedly carried out by a group identifying as “ODIYAN911” and claiming affiliation with Indian hackers, left a message prominently displayed on the site. Despite the swift response from BMD officials, who managed to restore functionality by 10:27 am, concerns lingered regarding potential damage inflicted upon the department’s server infrastructure.

Monowar Hossain, a meteorologist at BMD, highlighted the seriousness of the incident, stating, “We’ve successfully recovered the website after the hack. However, we are currently assessing the extent of any damage caused to our server.” The breach underscores the vulnerability of critical public services to cyber threats and has prompted an immediate investigation to determine the perpetrators. Authorities are working diligently to trace those responsible and implement stronger cybersecurity measures to prevent future breaches.

The disruption not only inconvenienced users who rely on the BMD website for crucial meteorological updates but also serves as a stark reminder of the evolving cybersecurity landscape in which such attacks are increasingly common. The message left by the hackers, claiming responsibility and affiliation, adds a geopolitical dimension to the incident, potentially straining relations between Bangladesh and India in the realm of cybersecurity. As investigations proceed, stakeholders are advocating for heightened vigilance and resilience against cyber threats to safeguard essential digital infrastructures and public trust in governmental services.

The BMD’s swift recovery efforts and ongoing investigations reflect a coordinated response aimed at restoring public confidence and ensuring the resilience of digital services crucial to national security and public welfare.
