Amazon is reportedly developing a new AI chatbot named Metis to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The project, internally dubbed Metis after the Greek goddess of wisdom, aims to outperform existing AI assistants by leveraging Amazon’s proprietary AI model called Olympus. This model, an enhanced version of the Titan model, is set to power a revamped Alexa service known as Remarkable Alexa, requiring a subscription fee.
Similar to ChatGPT, Metis is designed to engage users with intelligent responses, provide source links, generate images, and suggest follow-up queries. What sets Metis apart is its use of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology, allowing it to fetch real-time information beyond its training data. This capability promises more accurate and timely responses compared to traditional AI chatbots.
Metis is expected to function not just as a conversational assistant but also as an AI agent capable of automating complex tasks like flight bookings or itinerary planning. Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, has projected substantial revenue generation from these AI initiatives, highlighting their strategic importance in driving significant sales growth for the company in the coming years.
