Elon Musk has unexpectedly sought to withdraw a legal case against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, alleging a departure from the company’s original mission of AI development for humanity’s benefit. The filing, submitted by Musk’s lawyers, offered no explanation for the sudden move, arriving just before the scheduled court hearing. Despite attempts to dismiss the case, Musk’s team maintains the option to reactivate it later, seeking a “dismissal without prejudice.”
In February of this year, Musk initiated the lawsuit, contending that OpenAI had veered away from its altruistic objectives to focus solely on profit-making endeavors. However, OpenAI refuted these claims, highlighting Musk’s prior endorsement of a for-profit structure and suggestion of merging with Tesla. The legal dispute escalated following Apple’s partnership announcement with OpenAI, prompting Musk to express criticism on his social media platform, X.
Despite Musk’s objections, investors responded positively to Apple’s collaboration with OpenAI, driving Apple’s market value to an all-time high exceeding $3 trillion. Meanwhile, Musk continued to pursue his own AI venture, xAI, launched in July 2023, with subsequent developments such as the creation of Grok, a chatbot designed to rival ChatGPT, indicating his ongoing involvement in the AI landscape.
