SAP Issues Critical Security Updates

SAP, a leading enterprise software maker, has released a series of critical updates in its May 2024 Security Patch Day, addressing 14 new and three updated security notes. Among these, two new and one updated security notes are classified as ‘hot news,’ indicating the highest severity level in SAP’s security framework. These critical vulnerabilities affect key products such as Business Client, CX Commerce, and NetWeaver Application Server ABAP and ABAP Platform.

The most severe vulnerability, CVE-2019-17495, impacts SAP’s Customer Experience (CX) Commerce. This CSS injection issue in Swagger UI can lead to CSS-based input field value exfiltration using the Relative Path Overwrite (RPO) technique, earning it a CVSS score of 9.8. Additionally, SAP has addressed CVE-2022-36364, a remote code execution flaw in the Apache Calcite Avatica library, caused by insufficient interface checks by the library’s JDBC driver. Both vulnerabilities in CX Commerce stem from third-party libraries integrated into SAP’s products.

Another critical vulnerability, CVE-2024-33006, was patched in NetWeaver. This file upload flaw, with a CVSS score of 9.6, allows an unauthenticated attacker to upload a malicious file to the server. Once accessed by a victim, this file can completely compromise the system. The updated ‘hot news’ note includes security updates for the Chromium-based browser in SAP Business Client, addressing 23 vulnerabilities, including three high-severity issues.

Furthermore, SAP announced patches for a high-severity cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform, due to insufficient sanitization of user input. The remaining 13 security notes resolve various medium- and low-severity issues across multiple SAP products, including Enable Now Manager, S/4HANA, My Travel Requests, and more. SAP customers are strongly advised to apply these security updates promptly. Although there is no evidence that these vulnerabilities have been exploited in the wild, the potential risks underscore the importance of maintaining up-to-date security practices.
