Knox City Council Reports Data Breach

The Knox City Council in Indiana has disclosed a cybersecurity incident involving OracleCMS, their out-of-hours customer call management service provider. The breach was discovered when an unauthorized third party gained access to a portion of OracleCMS’ data, subsequently publishing some of these files online. While Knox City Council’s own systems were not compromised in this incident, there is a potential risk that customer contact details including names, phone numbers, and some property addresses might have been accessed.

OracleCMS has responded by engaging with government authorities and a cybersecurity expert to secure their systems and investigate the extent of the intrusion. The primary concern is for customers who have contacted the council outside of regular business hours, as their information could have been exposed. Knox City Council is closely monitoring the situation and working with OracleCMS to ascertain the full scope of the data affected.

In response to the breach, Knox City Council has taken immediate preventive measures to protect their constituents. They have instructed OracleCMS to cease the collection of any customer information temporarily and to redirect any urgent requests directly to the council’s on-call staff. This step is intended to minimize any further risk while the breach is contained and investigated.

Knox City Council has expressed its commitment to the security of its customers’ information and regrets the concern this incident may cause. They have assured the public that they will contact directly those customers affected by the breach, providing them with guidance on how to mitigate any potential misuse of their information. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available, ensuring transparency and maintaining trust with the community.
