Robert A. Purbeck, also known as “Lifelock” and “Studmaster,” recently pleaded guilty in an Atlanta federal courtroom to two charges in an 11-count indictment from 2021. The charges related to violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). Purbeck’s case had been a subject of interest for DataBreaches since 2017 when he revealed details of his hacks and extortion attempts involving medical sector organizations. Although the recent guilty plea was not directly related to these initial incidents, these events drew the attention of law enforcement, leading to a search warrant executed at Purbeck’s home in 2019 and an indictment in 2021 for three other, including those on the Family Medical Center in Georgia, Newnan City in Georgia, and an orthodontist in Florida.
In his plea agreement, Purbeck faces the possibility of a maximum term of imprisonment of 5 years for each count. Moreover, he is obliged to full restitution, due and payable immediately, to all victims of the offense(s) and relevant conduct. prosecution is set to recommend that Purbeck be sentenced to no more than 70 months imprisonment, followed by a term of supervised release.
