ConsensioHealth’s Data Breach

ConsensioHealth, a medical billing service based in Wisconsin, recently informed 60,871 individuals about a ransomware attack that occurred in July 2023. The attack came to light on July 3, 2023, when staff encountered difficulties accessing files on the network. Immediate actions were taken to halt further unauthorized access, and external cybersecurity experts were brought in to assist with the investigation. Their primary goal was to ascertain whether patient data had been compromised. Subsequent investigations confirmed that data had indeed been stolen, with confirmation on November 7, 2023. The affected patients belonged to various covered entities, including Emergency Medicine Specialists, S.C., Ascension Wisconsin, Wisconsin Urgent Care, Kenosha Urgicare, Fox Valley Emergency Medicine, Dr. Linda Jingle, and Woundcare Innovations of Golf Land.

The breadth of compromised data varied from person to person, potentially including sensitive information such as names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, account credentials, health insurance details, medical treatment and diagnosis records, treatment cost information, patient account numbers, Medicare or Medicaid identifiers, healthcare provider details, and prescription data. In response to this breach, ConsensioHealth has reassessed and bolstered its information security protocols. They have undergone reviews and updates to their security practices, along with the implementation of additional security measures to prevent future incidents.

This incident underscores the persistent threat posed by ransomware attacks to healthcare organizations and the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures. The compromise of sensitive patient information can have significant ramifications for individuals’ privacy and financial security. Organizations in the healthcare sector must remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding sensitive data against evolving cyber threats. ConsensioHealth’s swift response and commitment to enhancing its security posture serve as a reminder of the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures in safeguarding patient information and maintaining trust within the healthcare ecosystem.
