Pentagon’s AI Pioneer Steps Down

The Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer, Craig Martell, is set to step down from his position in April, having effectively built the newly established division into a significant component of the department’s operations. During Martell’s tenure, the office released a series of guidance, toolkits, and resources, shaping a comprehensive strategy for data, analytics, and AI adoption within the department. Martell’s departure, confirmed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, marks a transition to Radha Plumb, the current deputy undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment, who will take on the role as his successor.

Acknowledging Martell’s significant contributions, Secretary Austin praised Martell and the entire CDAO team for their efforts in advancing data, AI, and analytics for national security. Martell’s work has left a lasting impact on the department’s approach to data and AI-driven tasks, emphasized Austin in his statement. While the reasons for Martell’s departure remain undisclosed, his successor, Radha Plumb, brings a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors, having previously served in key roles within the Department of Defense and major technology firms like Google and Facebook.

Plumb’s background in tackling pressing acquisition matters related to the Department of Defense positions her well for the challenges ahead as she steps into the role of Chief Digital and AI Officer. With Martell’s departure, Plumb is expected to continue the momentum established under his leadership, ensuring the office’s continued influence and effectiveness within the department. As the Pentagon navigates the evolving landscape of digital and AI technologies, Plumb’s leadership will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of data and AI initiatives within the defense sector.
