FBI Director Christopher A. Wray has issued a warning regarding heightened cyber threats posed by Chinese hackers targeting crucial U.S. infrastructure. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Wray stressed the urgency of addressing this growing danger.
Wray revealed that Chinese state-sponsored hackers have been actively infiltrating networks controlling telecommunications, energy, water, and other vital infrastructure since at least 2011. He described the current situation as reaching a “fever pitch,” with China intensifying its offensive capabilities within critical U.S. systems.
The FBI, working in collaboration with intelligence agencies and allied security services, successfully shut down the Volt Typhoon hacking group. This group had obtained long-term access to critical infrastructure networks, including those in Guam, a strategic U.S. military outpost in the Pacific. Wray’s remarks underscore the imperative for international cooperation to counter Chinese cyber threats effectively.
Amidst escalating tensions, Wray urged “rule-of-law nations” to unite against Chinese hacking activities. He emphasized the need for increased vigilance and collective action to thwart potential cyberattacks that could jeopardize the safety and security of American civilians and critical infrastructure.
