Cloud Smishing via AWS SNS

February 16, 2024

Threat actors have devised a sophisticated smishing campaign, leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) Simple Notification Service (SNS) alongside a custom bulk-messaging script named SNS Sender. This campaign targets individuals through fake USPS notifications, gathering personal and financial data via fraudulent web pages. The abuse of AWS SNS, a cloud-based messaging platform, underscores the evolving landscape of cyber threats, where attackers exploit legitimate cloud services to perpetrate their malicious activities.

SentinelOne’s report highlights the unique nature of the attack, emphasizing the intersection of cloud technology and cybersecurity threats. By compromising legitimate cloud credentials, threat actors can utilize AWS SNS to orchestrate large-scale smishing campaigns, posing significant risks to businesses and individuals alike. The prevalence of such attacks underscores the importance of robust cloud security measures and proactive monitoring to detect and mitigate emerging threats effectively.

Notably, the SNS Sender script authors, known by the alias “ARDUINO_DAS,” have a history in the phishing kit scene, showcasing the adaptability and persistence of cybercriminals in evolving their tactics. Despite facing scrutiny and accusations, these threat actors continue to refine their techniques, exploiting vulnerabilities in cloud services to maximize their impact. With AWS SNS serving as a conduit for delivering fraudulent messages, businesses must remain vigilant and implement stringent security protocols to safeguard against such attacks.

The implications of the AWS SNS hijacking extend beyond immediate security concerns, affecting businesses’ reputations and operational capabilities. Compromised credentials not only facilitate fraudulent activities but also tarnish the image of legitimate organizations, potentially leading to reputational damage. Furthermore, the loss of SMS capabilities due to hijacked credentials poses operational challenges for businesses reliant on such communication channels, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive security measures to mitigate the risks posed by cloud-based smishing campaigns.
