Pro-India Attacks on Maldives

Amidst rising tensions and a growing political divide between India and the Maldives, the cyber landscape has transformed into a battleground for warfare.

Pro-India cyber groups have unleashed targeted assaults on several Maldivian institutions, including the Maldives National Defence Force, Maldives Bureau of Statistics, Maldives Business Times, Juvenile Court of Maldives, Maldives Immigration Department, and the Finance Department of Maldives.

These attacks, as reported by a cybersecurity research agency on X, intensify concerns about the potential consequences on both nations’ cybersecurity. Several cybercriminal groups, including Team UCC, Network Nine, Black Dragon Sec, and others, are actively involved in the ongoing cyberattacks, strategically targeting key institutions.

The digital warfare adds a complex layer to an already strained India-Maldives relationship, with cyber threats initially focusing on prominent websites like the Juvenile Court, the Maldivian President’s Office, the Foreign Ministry, and the Tourism Ministry.

The compromise of the Maldivian Juvenile Court website resulted in a warning message expressing discontent and outlining motivations behind the cyberattack, emphasizing the need to cease inflammatory statements.

The cyber conflict raises concerns about its impact on cybersecurity, intertwining geopolitics and the digital realm. Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed denounced disparaging remarks, urging positive international relations.

While the cyber assault targeted Maldives government websites, speculations about motives, including possible Chinese involvement, lack concrete evidence.

The evolving cyber conflict adds complexity to understanding motivations, highlighting the intricate intersection of digital warfare, diplomatic tensions, and geopolitical dynamics.
