UK’s Caravan Club Data Breach

The Caravan and Motorhome Club grapples with a suspected cyberattack, causing widespread IT outages for the past five days, as reported by the club’s director general. Members have reported difficulties accessing digital channels and contacting the contact center, prompting concerns and frustrations.

The company has notified the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) of a significant data security incident, initiating an investigation into potential unauthorized access or data theft. Despite the disruption, the club’s network of 2,200 Certificated Locations appears unaffected by the cyber incident.

The club’s problems reportedly began on January 20, initially attributed to website maintenance, but further communication clarified the involvement of external teams in restoring systems. Members criticize the club for a lack of communication during the ongoing incident. The club’s director general, Nick Lomas, issued an apology, acknowledging the cyber security incident and detailing the immediate actions taken to minimize its impact. The company deployed best practice response protocols, including taking all systems offline and implementing enhanced monitoring technology.

Lomas emphasized the club’s adherence to advice from cybersecurity experts to maintain discretion during the initial phases of the incident. The investigation is ongoing to understand the extent of the incident, with efforts to establish whether there was any unauthorized access or data exfiltration. The company is working diligently with internal and external specialist teams to restore systems carefully and methodically. Lomas reaffirms the importance of data security, apologizes for the inconvenience caused, and assures members that individual notifications will be sent if any breach of member data is established.
