White House Fights Deepfake Threats

February 13, 2024

Deepfake and generative AI scams, presenting as increasingly pervasive threats, have caught the attention of the White House, prompting proactive measures to counteract their spread. Notably, official releases from the White House, such as President Joe Biden’s addresses, will now undergo cryptographic verification, aimed at ensuring their authenticity. This development comes in the wake of a recent incident in New Hampshire where a fake robocall impersonating Biden surfaced, raising concerns about the potential for AI-amplified electoral misinformation.

To address the growing concern surrounding AI-generated scams, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken decisive action by outlawing unwanted robocalls produced by AI. This move empowers states to prosecute creators of unsolicited spam robocalls, serving as a deterrent against malicious actors leveraging AI technology for fraudulent purposes. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel underscored the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the need to combat voice cloning scams and eliminate deceptive robocalls that exploit vulnerable individuals and misinform voters.

While the focus has primarily been on combating AI-generated voice scams, the threat of video deepfakes remains a significant concern. The White House, recognizing the potential confusion and harm posed by manipulated videos, is developing strategies to ensure clarity and authenticity in official communications. This includes the implementation of cryptographic verification methods, such as private and public key pairing, to authenticate content originating from the White House and bolster trust among the public.

However, challenges persist, including the need for widespread public trust in the administration and concerns about potential misuse of cryptographic verification methods. Moreover, the possibility of political ramifications arising from official communications, particularly in situations where errors or controversial statements occur, underscores the complexities involved in combating the proliferation of deepfake and AI-generated scams.
