Windows 11 January 2024 Preview Update

Microsoft has unleashed the January 2024 preview update, KB5034204, for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, featuring crucial fixes for Bluetooth audio issues and a resolution for 24 identified bugs. This non-security optional cumulative update offers a sneak peek into enhancements and fixes before the widespread release on February 2024’s Patch Tuesday. Among the key improvements, the update addresses Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio earbuds losing sound during music streaming and rectifies audio routing issues with Bluetooth phone calls on PCs.

Additionally, the KB5034204 update tackles diverse issues, including a Start menu search deadlock, OpenType font driver bugs affecting text rendering in specific hardware configurations, and intermittent device unresponsiveness post-installation of a print support app. This optional “C” update can be installed through ‘Download and install’ after checking for updates in Settings > Windows Update. For those preferring manual installation, the update is accessible from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Furthermore, the preview update brings added reliability during power transitions, resolves concerns with certain 7-Zip files appearing as empty in File Explorer, and addresses BitLocker data-only encryption issues related to mobile device management services. Microsoft emphasizes that after February 2024, optional, non-security preview releases for Windows 11 version 22H2 will cease, with only cumulative monthly security updates continuing. However, Windows 11 version 23H2 and Windows 10 version 22H2 will still receive both security and optional releases.
