The Australian Government has appointed Air Marshal Darren Goldie AM CSC as the first National Cyber Security Coordinator, a role aimed at enhancing Australia’s cyber resilience.
With over 30 years of distinguished service, Air Marshal Goldie, formerly Air Commander Australia, has played a crucial role in building capabilities and resilience for the Royal Australian Air Force.
His responsibilities included coordinating defense responses to natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic. Having held key leadership positions, including at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, where he provided strategic foreign policy advice in 2020-21, Air Marshal Goldie is set to commence his term as the National Cyber Security Coordinator on July 3, 2023.
In his new role, Air Marshal Goldie will collaborate with the National Office of Cyber Security to drive initiatives that position Australia strategically in responding to the opportunities and threats of the digital age.
The National Cyber Security Coordinator will lead the development of national cyber security policy, coordinate responses to major cyber incidents, oversee whole-of-government cyber incident preparedness efforts, and strengthen Commonwealth cyber security capabilities.
This appointment aligns with the Albanese Government’s commitment to implementing a 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy, reinforcing the nation’s cyber defenses.
The decision follows a Cyber Security Industry Roundtable hosted by the Prime Minister earlier this year, emphasizing the government’s proactive approach to addressing cyber challenges.
