Monti Ransomware Hits Healthcare Provider

January 5, 2024

in Incidents

The Monti ransomware group has claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on Diablo Valley Oncology, a prominent healthcare provider specializing in comprehensive cancer care. The ransomware group, known for audacious tactics, has not disclosed the details of the breach, leaving uncertainty about the extent of data compromise and the motive behind the attack. Diablo Valley Oncology integrates various services such as medical oncology, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, PET/CT and diagnostic imaging, research, and supportive care.

This is not the first time the Monti ransomware group has targeted a significant institution. In 2023, they allegedly breached the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), claiming responsibility on their dark web channel and adding AUT to their “Wall of Shame.” The motives behind the attacks remain unclear, but the group suggested exploiting perceived lax security measures. The Monti ransomware group initially gained attention in 2022 by mimicking the tactics of the Conti ransomware, even using its leaked source code.

The cyberattack on Diablo Valley Oncology showcases a departure from Monti’s traditional motives of financial gain. Instead, the group claims to view their activities as a form of ethical hacking, exposing vulnerabilities in corporate networks. The healthcare sector has increasingly become a target for ransomware attacks, posing significant challenges for institutions dealing with sensitive patient data. The incident underscores the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and vigilance within the healthcare industry to protect against evolving cyber threats.
