Americans Plagued by Spam Calls

Recent data from Truecaller has shed light on the alarming frequency of spam and scam calls inundating American consumers. The Swedish provider, known for its caller ID and call blocking services, disclosed that US residents faced an estimated two billion of these unwanted calls in the last month. Although this figure marks a decrease from the peak of over 2.6 billion spam calls reported in November 2022, it still translates to nearly six nuisance or malicious calls per person every month, highlighting the persistent challenge faced by phone users. This revelation comes as part of Truecaller’s Monthly US Spam and Scam Report, extrapolated from its own userbase analysis in the US, cross-referenced with government census data.

The impact of these incessant calls extends beyond annoyance, with Americans estimated to have spent approximately 195 million hours collectively answering such calls in 2023 so far, signifying a significant loss in productive time and efficiency. The report also unveils the prevalent nature of various scams throughout the year, including credit card fraud, identity theft, insurance-related schemes, and more. Additionally, with the holiday season approaching, Truecaller warns of an expected surge in scams, such as fake charity donations, deceptive deliveries, and voice deepfakes used to impersonate loved ones, urging consumers to remain vigilant and informed about evolving fraudulent tactics targeting smartphone users. and Scam Report, extrapolated from its own userbase analysis in the US, cross-referenced with government census data.
