The FBI is currently investigating a cyberattack that targeted a Las Vegas plastic surgeon’s office, resulting in the exposure of patients’ records, including explicit “before and after” photos, on the internet.
Hackers have posted these compromising photos along with sensitive information, such as social security numbers, and are demanding a ransom for their removal. This incident has led to nearly a dozen women filing lawsuits against Hankins & Sohn Plastic Surgery Associates, alleging negligence in safeguarding their personal files.
The breach took place in late February when cybercriminals infiltrated the medical office’s network and downloaded extensive medical records. Patients expressed their distress, with one woman disclosing her mortification at the unauthorized exposure of her personal information and photos.
Another victim reported unauthorized access to her bank account, resulting in a $1,000 withdrawal. The hack potentially affected up to 12,000 patients, all of whom received notifications from the practice regarding the online breach in either March or April.
The involvement of the FBI underscores the severity of this cyberattack, especially given the highly sensitive nature of the exposed information, including explicit images. Patients affected by the breach are taking legal action against the plastic surgery practice, citing inadequate protection of their private data. The investigation continues, while the medical office, Hankins & Sohn Plastic Surgery Associates, has not issued an immediate response to inquiries regarding the incident.
