In a worrisome revelation, the dark web has witnessed the exposure of 34 million credentials from the popular Roblox gaming platform between 2021 and 2023. The surge in compromised accounts is alarming, escalating by a staggering 231% over the past three years, indicating a concerning trend in cybercriminal activity targeting the platform. The data comes from the latest Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence report, which also highlights a broader surge in compromised accounts across various gaming platforms, including Twitch, Electronic Arts, Sony PlayStation, and Steam, with a 112% increase since 2021.
According to security experts, cybercriminals employ deceptive tactics, embedding infostealers within cheat code files and sharing malicious download links on widely-used platforms like YouTube. This exploitation preys on the trusting nature of young gamers, leading to a significant number of compromised accounts emerging from games designed for children.
While Roblox accounts are frequently compromised, the primary focus of cybercriminals on the dark web often leans towards platforms like Steam, where real-money theft potential is higher. However, Roblox accounts remain attractive for exploitation, offering in-game currency and valuable items. To address these rising threats, individuals and organizations are advised to implement security measures such as unique passwords, two-factor authentication, and reliable security solutions.
