Williams County Abstract Company (WCAC) experienced a data security incident discovered on March 26, 2024. Unusual activity was detected in their digital environment, leading WCAC to immediately secure their network and engage cybersecurity experts to investigate. The investigation revealed that an unauthorized actor had accessed certain files and data within their systems.
On July 16, 2024, WCAC confirmed that personal information, including names and Social Security numbers, was among the compromised data. They completed a thorough review to determine the extent of the breach and began notifying affected individuals on July 26, 2024. Two Maine residents were notified via U.S. First-Class Mail about the incident.
To address the breach, WCAC has taken steps to enhance its security measures to prevent future incidents. Additionally, they are offering affected individuals 12 months of complimentary services through IDX, a ZeroFox Company. These services include credit monitoring, dark web monitoring, and identity theft recovery support.
WCAC has also set up a call center for support over the next 90 days. They continue to work diligently to manage the impact of the incident and support those affected by the breach.
