This extensive reach is the core reason that the June “IT security incident” has sparked fears far beyond the creative industries.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that the majority of Prospect’s substantial membership of 150,000 people had their personal data compromised during the cyber-attack. The initial focus of reporting was understandably on the impact the breach had on Bectu members, who work across film, television, and other areas of the entertainment world. However, the scope of Prospect’s representation is far more sprawling and complex than its most visible group suggests, involving professions critical to national infrastructure and governance.
The organization represents a significant number of individuals working in highly sensitive professions, which is why the breach is being taken so seriously by security experts. Crucially, the union’s membership includes personnel at the Ministry of Defence and various key military suppliers. Furthermore, Prospect’s civil servant members are positioned across a wide variety of government departments, giving the union a deep connection to the inner workings of the state.
The type of information accessed during the breach confirms the serious nature of the security incident. The compromised data was not limited to simple contact information; it included vital personal and financial records. Specifically, the data accessed during the breach included members’ bank details, their full contact details, and various “personal identifiers” such as birth dates.
