On Thursday, TV Ciudad’s website in Uruguay was hacked in a cyberattack that involved manipulated images. The attackers used artificial intelligence to create fake photos of political figures like Yamandú Orsi, Carolina Cosse, and Martín Lema. They also posted threats targeting the Chamber of Commerce and displayed visual interventions on the website. These included altered political content and mocking photos of national leaders, particularly an image of Martín Lema with his torso exposed.
The hackers left a defiant message on the website, saying they had “entered, sat down, had coffee, and rifled through the drawers.
” The message also included a warning to the Chamber of Commerce, threatening further attacks if it continued its actions against Uruguayans. The attackers’ identity was linked to a user named GO.ETH, previously involved in similar incidents on other major media portals in Uruguay.
TV Ciudad confirmed that they had reported the attack to the authorities and were working to restore their website. At this point, no sensitive data was reportedly accessed. The investigation is ongoing, with further analysis to determine the full scope and identity of the attackers involved.
The incident highlights the growing cyber threats targeting media outlets and public institutions in Uruguay. The government and authorities are taking steps to prevent further breaches, ensuring that national security and media integrity are protected.
