tenki.jp Faces Network Disruptions from DDoS

US Secretary Yellen’s Computer Hacked

Tenki.jp, a prominent weather forecasting service managed by the Japan Meteorological Association, has been experiencing significant accessibility issues due to a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. The attack, which began on January 15, 2025, at 7:51 AM JST, led to network congestion, making it difficult for users to access the service’s website. The disruption is primarily affecting web-based content, which is slow to load, as well as certain elements within the mobile app. As a result, users have faced difficulties retrieving weather information on both platforms.

Despite these challenges, the Japan Meteorological Association confirmed that weather information continued to be delivered to broadcast stations, newspapers, and other corporate partners without any issues. This ensures that the most up-to-date meteorological data is still being distributed to those who rely on it for broadcast and print purposes. However, the website’s overall performance, especially for individual users, remains impaired due to the ongoing attack.

The association has been actively addressing the situation by implementing countermeasures against the DDoS attack and working to resolve the network congestion as quickly as possible. While recovery efforts are ongoing, the team has advised users to update the Tenki.jp app to the latest version, as this may improve performance and help alleviate some of the issues users have been facing. It is expected that these efforts will bring the service back to full functionality in the near future.

The have already faced another DDoS issue a week before and their efforts continue on applying remediation to the situation.

Tenki.jp, which is widely regarded for its reliable weather forecasting services in Japan, plays a crucial role in providing essential weather data. This data includes weather forecasts, radar images, and updates on significant weather events such as typhoons or earthquakes. The disruptions caused by this attack highlight the vulnerability of digital services to cyber threats, underscoring the need for robust cybersecurity measures to ensure continuity in providing vital services to the public.
