The nonprofit Promises2Kids recently reported a significant data security breach event. They officially notified the Attorney General of California about this serious incident. Sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been unfortunately compromised. According to their breach notice discovery occurred around September 2024. Promises2Kids found an unauthorized actor possibly had access to its computer network. As a direct result the organization launched an immediate and thorough internal investigation. This investigation aimed to determine the full nature and scope of the security incident. Their primary concern was the safety and security of all data held in its care.

The internal investigation confirmed unauthorized data access around May 12, 2025. It found sensitive personal information in its systems may have been illicitly accessed. This information may also have been acquired by an unauthorized third party. Promises2Kids then began a careful review of all the potentially affected data. They worked to determine what specific information had actually been impacted by this breach. They also aimed to identify all the specific individuals who were directly affected. The exact type of exposed personal information has not yet been made publicly available. However California guidelines define “personal information” very broadly to include many data types.

This can include names Social Security numbers financial details and private medical information.

As a result of this confirmed data breach Promises2Kids initiated its response plan. The organization immediately began mailing data breach notification letters to all impacted individuals. These important letters were sent to every person whose information may have been compromised. The breach notice specifically sent to California residents provides them with further details. Promises2Kids is providing these affected individuals with a list of their information involved. This list specifies the types of sensitive personal data impacted for each person. Additionally they are offering complimentary credit monitoring services to those who were affected.

These services are intended to help protect individuals from potential identity theft or fraud.

Promises2Kids is a well-known nonprofit organization that is based in California. It was originally founded way back in 1981 under a completely different name. Its first name was the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation of San Diego County. The organization provides crucial support services primarily for vulnerable foster children. It also helps children removed from their homes due to reported abuse or neglect. Today Promises2Kids annually provides essential aid for over 3,000 young people. These are current or former foster youths residing within San Diego County in California. The organization is currently headquartered in the city of San Diego California. Promises2Kids presently employs a dedicated staff of over sixty individuals in its operations.
