Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the popularity of Meta’s Threads app by creating over 700 phony domain names in a single day to deceive users and distribute malware, according to cybersecurity analyst Veriti.
These bogus URLs redirect users to suspected malicious sites, posing significant security risks, including the potential for malware infection. Veriti warns users to exercise caution and only download the Threads app from official app stores like Google Play or the App Store to ensure they are accessing the genuine version.
Consumers are advised to avoid clicking on links shared through unverified sources and to verify the authenticity of Threads-related domains, as cybercriminals often employ spelling variations or lookalikes to deceive users.
