New Jersey Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery recently informed 74,413 patients about a cyberattack that compromised their protected health information. The security incident was detected on May 14, 2024, revealing that unauthorized access to the practice’s computer systems began around April 19, 2024. This breach exposed sensitive patient data, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and financial information.
Following the discovery of the attack, the practice quickly initiated its incident response procedures to secure its systems and prevent further unauthorized access. The investigation confirmed that certain files containing patient details were acquired by an unauthorized third party. Despite the breach, there is no evidence of actual or attempted misuse of the stolen data.
As a precaution, New Jersey Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery has warned patients to be vigilant for signs of identity theft and fraud. They have advised monitoring financial accounts and credit reports for any suspicious activity.
To support affected individuals, the practice is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. This measure is intended to help patients safeguard their personal information and mitigate any potential risks resulting from the data breach.
