Kintetsu World Express (KWE), a Japanese logistics company, confirmed it was the victim of a ransomware attack. The attack caused service disruptions, first discovered on April 23, but the company has not named the threat actor. While KWE is restoring affected systems, it stated it would notify customers if their data was compromised. As of now, no ransom demands or payments have been confirmed.
KWE is part of Kintetsu Group Holdings, a major railway conglomerate, and operates in over 30 countries. The company specializes in freight forwarding, coordinating shipments on behalf of businesses. While this ransomware attack has disrupted services, KWE is working to address the incident. The company has not provided further details on the extent of the disruption or the impact on clients.
This is not the first cyberattack KWE has faced. In the previous year, a hacker group named 888 claimed responsibility for breaching KWE’s data.
The ongoing investigation will hopefully provide more insight into this latest attack. However, the company’s previous experience with cyber threats highlights the growing concerns regarding security vulnerabilities in the logistics sector.
Cybersecurity risks targeting Japanese businesses have surged in recent months, with several high-profile companies affected. These include banks, government agencies, and major corporations like Casio and Kadokawa. Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro reported at least 46 incidents since late 2024, and the number of attacks continues to rise. As Japan grapples with escalating cyber threats, organizations are focusing on improving digital security measures.
