A GPS-spoofing attack targeted an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft while it was flying over Myanmar as part of Operation Brahma. The operation was launched by India to assist in the aftermath of a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025. The spoofing attack misled the aircraft’s navigation system by altering real-time coordinates mid-flight, creating confusion for the pilots. However, the Air Force pilots quickly switched to the internal navigation system (INS) to safely guide the aircraft to its destination, preventing any mishaps during the mission.
GPS spoofing is a type of cyberattack where fake signals are sent to override the legitimate satellite data, which can cause critical navigation systems to malfunction. This type of cyberattack has been seen in other regions, with similar spoofing incidents occurring near the India-Pakistan border. Since November 2023, there have been 465 reported cases near Amritsar and Jammu. Despite the attack, the pilots’ prompt action ensured the safety of the aircraft and its cargo, which was crucial to the ongoing humanitarian mission.
Operation Brahma was initiated by India to provide immediate support to Myanmar following the earthquake, which killed over 3,600 people and left thousands more injured.
The first tranche of humanitarian aid, including 15 tonnes of supplies such as tents, blankets, and medicines, was delivered by a C-130J aircraft on March 29. As of now, six aircraft and five Indian naval ships have delivered over 625 metric tons of humanitarian aid, helping to address the critical needs of the disaster-stricken population. The aid mission continues despite the difficulties posed by the lack of internet access and ongoing aftershocks.
The rescue operations in Myanmar are still ongoing, but they have been hampered by the country’s limited communication access due to tighter controls from the ruling junta.
Additionally, the erratic weather conditions and multiple aftershocks, including a 5.6 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, have further complicated efforts. Nevertheless, India’s commitment to assisting Myanmar remains strong, and the flow of aid and resources continues to support those affected by the earthquake. Despite the challenges, India’s operation is vital in providing much-needed relief to the devastated country.
