France’s Ecritel Hit With Ransomware Attack

On December 8, 2024, Ecritel, a French digital services company, became the target of a cyberattack claimed by the ransomware group Hunters International. The attack, which was quickly detected by Ecritel’s cybersecurity team, was reportedly aimed at stealing sensitive company data. However, the company assured that its business operations were not disrupted and that no customer platforms were affected. Ecritel emphasized that the intrusion was swiftly thwarted, and the company did not experience any significant operational impact.

Hunters International, in its claim, stated that it had exfiltrated around 270 GB of data from Ecritel. Screenshots posted on the group’s website appeared to show documents related to Ecritel’s network architecture, contractual agreements, and even its information system security plan. Despite these claims, Ecritel denied any data theft and reassured the public that only internal work documents, specific to employee-related tasks, were partially exfiltrated.

Ecritel also stated that the attack was part of a larger surge in cyberattacks, attributed to rising geopolitical tensions. The company assured stakeholders that the intrusion had no lasting effects on its operations, and that security measures, including third-party audits, were in place to ensure the integrity of its systems. To further mitigate any potential damage, Ecritel conducted a comprehensive analysis with a third-party PASSI-certified cybersecurity firm.

This incident is not an isolated case, as many other digital service providers, both in France and globally, have faced similar cyberattacks in recent years. Ecritel, however, remains confident in its preparedness and continues to strengthen its cybersecurity infrastructure. The company holds multiple certifications, including ISO 27001 and HDS, and continues to take proactive steps to address and mitigate the growing risk of cyber threats.
