Europol’s recent dismantling of the encrypted messaging platform MATRIX marks a major success in the global fight against organized crime. Additionally, the platform featured its own currency system, allowing users to pay for subscriptions without revealing their identities. This level of sophistication set MATRIX apart from other encrypted services like Sky ECC and EncroChat, making it a preferred tool for criminal organizations looking to hide their activities behind layers of encryption.
The dismantling of MATRIX involved the seizure of over 40 servers across France and Germany, as well as the interception of millions of criminal messages. The investigation uncovered critical intelligence, including links between MATRIX users and criminal operations. Over 2.3 million messages were decrypted in 33 different languages, providing valuable information on drug smuggling, arms deals, and financial crimes. As part of the operation, several arrests were made, including the apprehension of the suspected owner and operator of MATRIX, a 52-year-old Lithuanian national, who was captured in Spain. Law enforcement also seized significant assets, including cash, cryptocurrencies, and a large number of mobile devices.
