Discord Introduces Ignore Feature for Safety

US Sanctions Zservers for LockBit Ransomware

Discord has launched a new privacy feature called “Ignore” as part of its efforts to improve user safety, coinciding with Safer Internet Day 2025. The feature provides a less confrontational way for users to manage their interactions, addressing concerns about blocking, which many teens find too aggressive. By enabling users to ignore messages, direct messages, notifications, and activities from specific individuals without alerting them, the Ignore feature helps to create a safer and more peaceful online environment. This is especially valuable for younger users who may be hesitant to block someone but still wish to distance themselves from unwanted interactions.

The Ignore feature operates subtly, in contrast to the existing “Block” option that entirely severs communication and visibly signals the action. Users can still receive messages and view the profiles of those they’ve ignored, but their communications remain hidden unless the user chooses to view them. This feature ensures that users can avoid unwanted content or activity without escalating conflicts, helping to create a more comfortable digital space. Discord allows users to manage ignored accounts easily through the “Content & Social” tab in their User Settings, offering them full control over their interactions.

In addition to the Ignore feature, Discord has co-founded a new non-profit organization called ROOST (Robust Open Online Safety Tools), aimed at providing open-source safety tools for detecting and reporting harmful content like child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The initiative, which partners with major organizations such as OpenAI, Google, and Roblox, will help smaller platforms implement robust safety measures to protect users. Clint Smith, Discord’s Chief Legal Officer, will serve as the Board Chair of ROOST, further reinforcing Discord’s commitment to online safety and trust.

Through the introduction of the Ignore feature and its involvement in initiatives like ROOST, Discord is continuing to strengthen its role in fostering a safer digital environment. The Ignore feature allows users to disengage from harmful interactions discreetly, promoting empathy and personal boundaries. With these advancements, Discord is leading the charge in ensuring a safer and more responsible online space for all users.
