On October 2, 2024, Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), located in West Sacramento, CA, discovered a phishing attack targeting a small number of its email users. The incident was quickly investigated, with CAMC collaborating with a respected forensic security provider to address the breach. The investigation revealed that an unauthorized party gained access to a single email account between October 2 and 3, 2024. Fortunately, no other systems or data storage were affected by the attack, but the breach led to potential exposure of personal information.
The information at risk varied from person to person but may have included personal details such as first and last names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, health information, and health insurance details. CAMC took swift action to terminate unauthorized access and prevent further breaches.
Additionally, the organization worked to strengthen its security measures by providing employees with additional phishing training and implementing further technical safeguards against future phishing attempts.
As part of their response to the incident, CAMC offered impacted individuals access to identity theft protection services through IDX, which includes credit and CyberScan monitoring for 24 months, a $1,000,000 insurance reimbursement policy, and fully managed identity theft recovery services. To ensure affected individuals were supported, CAMC encouraged them to enroll in the identity protection program by contacting IDX via phone or through their website, with the deadline for enrollment set for May 14, 2025.
Despite the breach, CAMC reassured individuals that there was no indication their information had been misused. The organization also recommended that people remain vigilant and monitor their medical account statements for any unusual activity. As part of their commitment to safeguarding customer data, CAMC expressed regret for the incident and extended an apology for any inconvenience it may have caused to the affected individuals in West Sacramento, CA.
